The thing that left was a wide and deep lake. The lake was named Situ Bagendit. Situ means a wide lake. It was named Situ Bagendit, because the wide lake came from a wheel that belongs to Bagenda Far away in an isolated village there was a young rich woman. The house that she had been living in was very big. Her wealth was plentiful. The young woman lived by herself. She didn’t have any friend at all. “Wouw, I am very rich! Ha…ha…ha, I am the richest woman in this village!” said the young woman while she was looking at her gold and jewelries. It was so pity, that the young woman was very miserly. Her plentiful wealth never been used to help others. “All of the wealth is mine, isn’t it? So what am I give it all to other for?” The young woman thought. However, many of villagers were poor. They lived in less condition. Sometimes some villagers were hunger, and didn’t get any food for days. Because of the young woman miserly, the villagers called her Bagenda Endit. Bagenda Endit meant the miserly rich person. “Bagenda Endit, have mercy on me! My child has not eaten for few days”, said an old woman sadly. “Hi, you crazy old woman! Get away from me!” yelled Bagenda Endit threw the old woman away. Because the old woman didn’t want to go, Bagenda Endit splashed her with water. Splash!, and all over the old woman body and her baby became wet. Bagenda Endit was a feeling less woman. She didn’t even have a little bit mercy to the old woman and her baby. She even got more angry. After that, she asked the old woman to get out of her house yard. And then, she was dragging her out of the yard. Although Bagenda Endit was very miserly, the village people kept coming in. The came for the water wheel. “No, I won’t let you to take away the water from my wheel! The water in the wheel is mine!” Bagenda Endit yelled angrily. “Ha…ha…ha…you’re all stupid! You think you just can take the water from my wheel!” Bagenda Endit said while she was watching the thirst villagers outside the fence. Suddenly, a decrepit man was standing in Bagenda Endit house yard. He was walking tottery to the wheel while holding his stick. When the old man was trying to take the water, Bagenda Endit saw it. Then, she hit the old man with a founder. “Have mercy on me Bagenda Endit! I want to take the water just for a drink”, said the old man when he was trying to get up. Bagenda Endit kept beating the old man. And then, an astonishing thing happened. Suddenly the old man got up with a healthy body. He walked closer to Bagenda Endit. He pointed his stick at the cruel rich woman’s nose. “Hi, Bagenda Endit, take the punishment from me!” said the old man loudly. Then he pointed at the wheel with his stick. Wus…byuur, the wheel was sprinkling the water swiftly. Not long enough, the water was flooding up. Bagenda Endit couldn’t save herself. She drawn with all of her wealth. The village was disappeared. The thing that left was a wide and deep lake. The lake was named Situ Bagendit. Situ means a wide lake. It was named Situ Bagendit, because the wide lake came from a wheel that belongs to Bagenda Endit.

Situ Bagendit is a name of a lake near Garut. A beautiful lake at Banyuresmi sub-district, four kilometers north of Garut, to be is a story about what to be believed transpired in this lake years ago, when the lake was actually a village. This legend began with the richest person in the village a widow named Nyi Bagendit Nyi Endit. [Nyi or Nyai is referred to an important social status of a woman]. Why would be a name of a widow become a legend? Here is the story ... The Legend of Situ Bagendit When her husband passed away, Nyi Bagendit did not only inherit his wealth, but also his occupation a loan shark. He easily lent some money to the villagers with a steep interest rate and demanded their rice fields as the collateral. He repossessed the collateral whenever the borrower couldn't pay. That's how he became richer and richer. Nyi Bagendit continued his practice upon his Nyi Bagendit had become the richest person in that village, she didn't feel satisfied. She was well known to be a very stingy person. She was very fond of her wealth, especially her jewelry. Her only satisfaction was to gloat over them. Her biggest fear was the villagers would ask for her charity, because she didn't like to part with her wealth, not in the slightest day Nyi Bagendit had a great harvest. She hired villagers to harvest her vast paddy fields. When they finished, she celebrated the harvest by providing a feast for those hired hands. But being stingy, there wasn't enough food for them there wasn't any food left, an old man came. He looked poor, his shoulder hunched and he used a stick to support him walking. He asked for some an arrogant and stingy self, Nyi Bagendit got angry with the old man. She told him to get lost. In her opinion, he didn't deserve any food because he didn't work for her. Before he left, the old man stabbed his stick to the ground saying Sagala gé boh ka nu hadé boh ka nu goréng, moal taya wawalesna a Sundanese proverb, which means ... everything you do, both good and bad, will be reprised it's like a karma. All of a sudden water was spouting from the hole made by the stick. Since the water couldn’t be stopped, people fled in panic. They run to save their own to herself, the first thing Nyi Bagendit did was to save her precious wealth. She was so busy collecting them all, she didn’t realize the water had gradually submerged her house. She kept screaming for help, but nobody there to help her. Everybody had left the village and took refuge at the higher land. In the end Nyi Bagendit drowned hugging her precious water kept going until the whole village was submerged. It became a lake and it was named Situ Bagendit [Situ is a Sundanese word for a lake].Some people say until this day sometimes they see a huge creature as big as a matress, that looks like a leech lies on the bottom of Situ Bagendit. They believe that giant leech is Nyi Bagendit who is still protecting her precious belongings. Since this folklore is told verbally many times over, each storyteller might add his/her own version creating several versions of the story. But the essence is still the same a greedy, selfish, stingy widow who was drowned since she prioritize her possessions above anything else, including her own Bagendit is a beautiful and tranquil lake near Garut. Garut is also known for its hot springs and Cangkuang temple.
